“We were upgrading the switchboard anyway doing it with Basis instead of a regular board was barely any more expensive, and the insights are just phenomenal. We’d unreservedly recommend it.”
What we noticed
Janine and Andrew were partway through renovating their 1970s home when Basis appeared on her Facebook feed one morning. They already knew the switchboard needed upgrading, so a far smarter board for barely more than a standard one was an easy yes they signed up on the spot, right at the start of the Kickstarter. What impressed Janine most came next: Basis let them bring in their own electrician and have him trained. He was a young tradesman they’d trusted throughout the renovation, and theirs was the very first board he installed. Through the wait and the install the communication stayed clear, and every follow-up got a quick reply. Since installing the panel, the insights have surfaced things they’d never have spotted. Circuit- level data showed a heavily loaded kitchen circuit coffee maker, dishwasher and kettle all on the one line that would trip the breaker when everything ran at once. The app also made it easy to see exactly where their power was going, appliance by appliance, including testing what a routine on the hot water cylinder would actually save.
What changed
Armed with that clarity, Janine made simple changes rather than risk anything in an older home. She moved the kettle to another part of the kitchen, and the tripping stopped. She set up a routine on the hot water cylinder to test whether switching it off during the day would save money the data showed little difference on a newish cylinder, so she left it on. Every call came from real data, not guesswork.
Firmware updates have been effortless and the information always clear. As proud returners to New Zealand, the couple loved that the tech is Kiwi-developed. Their verdict: a 10-out-of-10, and they’d recommend Basis hands down.
