Safety

The Basis smart panel has the most extensive range of electrical safety capabilities on the market today – at a fraction of the current comparable market cost.

1924

The first miniature circuit breaker was introduced in 1924 and is the primary mechanical safety device still installed today

25yrs

The average electrical panel is about 25 years old with no or minimal updates in that time

82%

Approximately 82% of electrical panels installed in homes today would not meet current electrical safety regulations

Electrocution protection

While standard electric panels offer protection against certain severe electric shocks, the Basis smart panel has the most extensive range of electrical safety capabilities on the market today – at a fraction of the current comparable market cost. Its heightened sensitivity and advanced settings enable it to detect even milder shocks that might not trigger the 30mA RCDs commonly found in households. This additional layer of safety ensures enhanced protection for you and your family.

35%

Approximately 35% of the population will experience a mild to severe electric shock in their lifetime

20%

Around 30,000 non-fatal electric shock injuries happen in the US every year, 20% of these occur in children

1956

It’s been 68 years since the world’s first electrocution protection device was introduced to the market in 1956

Type-A RCD

Raising the bar

All packages

Type A RCD protection is the most basic form of electrocution protection available, and hasn’t improved much since its introduction in 1956. Most homes have Type A RCD protection on less than 60% of their circuits. At Basis we don’t believe that’s good enough, so we provide our customers with 100% coverage across every circuit to keep your family safe. Not only that, but our Type A RCD is in a league of its own. Its exceptional speed and accuracy provide ultimate peace of mind.

What’s an RCD?

An RCD is a life-saving safety device that protects you from serious electric shock by automatically cutting off power when a fault is detected. For example, if you're using a toaster and some wires inside get damaged, it could cause electricity to leak from the toaster and potentially flow through you if you touch it. With an RCD installed, as soon as this leakage is detected, the RCD instantly shuts off the power, preventing a potentially serious shock.

Type-B RCD

Gold standard in electrocution protection

Control package
Future package

Type B RCD provides fault detection across a much wider range of current types and frequencies. This ‘gold standard’ of electrocution protection is especially important if you have electrical systems like EV chargers, heat pumps and induction cooktops. Type-B RCD protection is prohibitively expensive, so most homeowners don’t have it. The Basis smart panel makes it affordable and available on every circuit.

2.2x

Type-B detection analyses 2.2x more current waveforms than Type-A detection for ultimate safety

$4,800

Upgrading a 12-circuit switchboard with Type-B protection could run up to $4,800.

Game changer

The first and only configurable Type-B RCD device on the market

Child protection

Safer for little ones, too

Control package
Future package

Your electrician can adjust your family’s configured electrocution thresholds to reduce the potential severity of injury from electric shock. This is particularly important if you have young children at home, who are far more susceptible to injury and death from electric shock.

6.5x

Young children are especially vulnerable to electrical shocks. Their smaller bodies can experience injuries up to 6.5 times greater than an adult male from a 30mA shock

10mA

Regulated earth leakage thresholds for children in daycares, kindergartens and hospitals

30mA

Earth leakage thresholds for adults, commonly installed in our homes

Nuisance avoidance

Too much. Too little. Just right.

All packages

Home appliances can produce small electrical leaks known as 'earth leakage.' In traditional electric panels with a single Residual Current Device (RCD) covering multiple circuits, these leaks can accumulate and cause the RCD to trip, unnecessarily cutting power. To combat this, the Basis smart panel comes with a dedicated RCD for each circuit, reducing the likelihood of nuisance trips. This method also ensures that if a fault does occur, only the affected circuit is disconnected, limiting the disruption to power.

What causes nuisance tripping?

Nuisance tripping, an unexpected event where a circuit breaker trips without an actual overload or fault, disrupts the flow of electricity. Various factors contribute to nuisance tripping. Transient currents, short bursts of high current during appliance startup, can exceed breaker thresholds, causing premature tripping. Loose or corroded wire connections in the panel create small leaks misinterpreted as ground faults, leading to trips. Voltage fluctuations or electrical noise from external sources may also trigger tripping.

Electrical fire protection

Just like it protects you from electrical shocks, the Basis smart panel provides robust defence against electrical fires. The smart panel surpasses the industry's safety benchmarks by incorporating protective devices on every circuit. This proactive approach acts as a safety net, catching electrical faults before they ignite into major problems. The best part is that the Basis smart panel makes the multi-layered protection approach affordable.

51,000

There are 51,000 electrical fires every year in the United States

1,900

Every year 500 people die, and 1,400 people suffer severe injuries from electrical fires

$1.5bn

Electrical fires cause over $1.5bn in property damage every year

C-curve overload

Beyond the basics

All packages

When circuits are overloaded, the buildup of heat can lead to fire. The most basic form of protection we have against these faults is C-curve overload protection. C-curve protection is a jack of all trades device that’s neither precise, nor powerful, it simply works to the minimum regulated safety standards. Basis introduces the most advanced overload protection.

What’s an Overload fault?

When circuits are overloaded, the buildup of heat can lead to fire. The Basis smart panel provides comprehensive overload protection that can be adjusted on a circuit-by-circuit basis.

Fast reflexes

Market leading response time to overload faults

14%

Of mechanical overload devices fail to trip within regulated timeframes when installed

2-40 amps

Your electrician can reconfigure your spare circuits without the hassle.

Advanced overload protection

Type-B & D

Control package
Future package

As our homes become increasingly more electrified with EV’s, heatpumps and induction cook-tops, we need better, more precise ways to protect the wiring that feeds these hungry appliances.

B-curve

B-curve overload lowers overload thresholds by 40% compared to C-curve, ensuring appliances like EVs, heat pumps, induction cook-tops, hot water cylinders, under floor heating & more are appropriately protected

D-curve

D-curve increases the overload threshold by 2x compared to C-curve so devices with large inrush currents, such as motors, can operate without nuisance tripping

Short circuit detection

Finding & preventing short circuits

All packages

Short circuits can damage appliances, cause shocks, or even trigger fires. The Basis smart panel puts you a step ahead because it identifies and shuts down short circuits before they become a problem. The real game-changer? The Basis app provides instant information about where and when short circuits occur. This pinpoints the exact issue, saving your electrician valuable time (and your wallet!) by eliminating the need to hunt down the source of the problem.

3kA

The Basis smart panel has a short circuit rating of 3kA

12x

The Basis smart panel’s digital intelligence detects short circuits 12x faster than a typical residential device

Arc fault detection

Protect your home from electrical fires

Control package
Future package

Arc faults are the leading cause of electrical fires. Your smart panel protects you against these dangerous faults with proprietary algorithms which shut off faulty circuits instantly while minimising nuisance tripping. Installing arc fault devices can lower your insurance premiums and excess, and allow you to avoid costly wiring upgrades.

What’s an arc fault?

An arc fault happens when a tiny spark jumps across a frayed, faulty or damaged wire, often hidden within the walls of your home. Arc faults are nobody’s friend—they cause 63% of all household electrical fires in the US, billions of dollars of damage and thousands of deaths globally every year.

63%

63% of all electrical fires are directly caused by arc faults

90%

Arc fault devices can prevent up to 90% of arc related fires

$20k+

Cost of an entire home wiring upgrade avoided by installing arc fault devices
